Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia

Sitting prominently beside the Petronas Twin Towers, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre combines clean, modern lines through its external form with subtle designs that expresses the Malaysian culture and tradition.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre was envisioned to be the premier venue for staging large international conventions and exhibitions that were previously beyond the country’s scope.

The distinctive bird-like design of the roof demands specific requirements especially in terms of acoustic performance, easy maintenance and durability of system. Challenges faced in the development of the roof construction include ensuring a long lasting roofing construction that provides the best indoor acoustic climate.

Roxul Hardrock 80 on a flat roof membrane construction was used to diffuse the rain noise impact on the roof as well as to enable foot traffic for easy installation and maintenance work. Hardrock also offers the added benefits of good thermal performance and fire safety properties.

IKEA Tampines, Singapore

After being in Singapore for 28 years, Swedish home furnishings specialist IKEA has expanded to include 2 more stores in the Tampines Avenue 10 area that offers better shopping experience and greater convenience for all Singaporeans.

The IKEA architecture is an integral part of every IKEA store design in which the entire building is ‘wrapped’ in the IKEA trademark blue and yellow. Although the store was built to leverage on its hallmark European ambience but much care has been taken to understand and address the local customers’ needs. The building is visually clear, focused and stripped to the essential with the method of construction adopting similar European technique of off-site prefabrication and installation on site.

The roof construction consisted of sandwiched elements with impermeable PVC membrane material, 100mm thick Roxul Hardrock 80, aluminium foil and a layer of metal decking on the underside.

Hardrock 80 was specifically selected for the mechanical strength and excellent thermal performance while also providing a non-combustible core to the roofing system. These properties were important to form a single-ply roofing membrane system that provides a robust and lasting roof with easy foot traffic access for roof maintenance. Furthermore, IKEA’s close proximity to the express way and Changi airport means a high performance requirement for sound insulation in the roof construction.

The insulated membrane roof system also helped minimise roof temperature and reduce air condition load on the building hence contributing to energy savings.
